Green Tree Rotary gave dictionaries to 430 third grade students in local elementary schools.  This is part of The Dictionary Project, which is a national program working to put dictionaries in the hands of third grade students throughout the country.  The goal of this program is to assist all students in becoming good writers, active readers, creative thinkers, and resourceful learners by providing them with their own personal dictionary. The dictionaries are a gift to each student to use at school and at home for years to come. Educators see third grade as the dividing line between learning to read and reading to learn, so we encourage our sponsors to give dictionaries each year to children in the third grade.  We gave dictionaries to the students at Pittsburgh Westwood, Langley, Banksville, and Weil Elementary Schools, St Margaret of Scotland Elementary School and Keystone Oaks Elementary Schools, Aiken, Dormont and Myrtle Elementary Schools.  The children loved them.

Green Tree Rotary raised money to provide dictionaries to third grade students through The Dictionary Project, a nonprofit organization. (Twelve) Rotarians delivered a total of 352 dictionaries to students in the following seven schools:  Dormont Elementary , Fred L. Aiken Elementary and Myrtle Elementary in Keystone Oaks School District and Pittsburgh Schaeffer Elementary, Pittsburgh Stevens Elementary, and Pittsburgh  Westwood Elementary in addtion to St. Margaret of Scotland Elementary School in Green Tree.  The Dictionary Project is designed to aid third grade teachers in their goal to see all their students leave at the end of the year as good writers, active readers, and creative thinkers.  Our purpose is to provide third grade students in the community with their own personal dictionary.  The dictionary is for the children to keep, so they can take it with them into the fourth grade and use it throughout their school career.     The childen (and teachers) were thrilled, and the children kept asking "is it ours to keep?  Really?"

Green Tree Rotary held its annual Pancake Breakfast on Saturday, October 23, 2010.  Pancakes, sausage, buckwheat pancakes were served to the many guests, including the entire Bishop Canevin Football Team!  We raised about $1800, half of which was donated to the food bank at Wallace Memorial Presbyterian Church, with the balance being used for local charities.
